ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
KABOD is a musical collaboration of Boyd Barrett (author, lyricist, spoken word artist, and lead vocalist) and Carl Erdmann (composer, arranger, lead musician, and recording engineer). Undergirded by their decades-long friendship, Boyd and Carl have melded their growing spiritual thinking and eclectic musical styles to produce a unique and vibrant presentation of an ancient message. The first disc (tracks 1-22) includes the full narrative and vocals over a richly diverse soundtrack. The second disc (tracks 23-40) repackages much of the soundtrack plus a few additions to create an instrumental concerto.

Many thanks to the contributions of Sheryl McCool and Carolyn Drakulich on vocals, Jimmy Barnes on guitar and mandolin, Chip Sellarole on harmonica, and Phil King on keyboard. Boyd played guitar on a couple of songs. The Chapman Stick and all the rest (more instruments than can be listed here) can be attributed to Carl.

BOYD'S NOTES:
The vocabulary and symbolism in KABOD come from my own spiritual journey as a lover and follower of Jesus. However, the deep truths embedded in these words and symbols can hopefully be accessed by anyone in their own search for a foundational narrative.

I believe the energy behind the creation of the universe is intimately personal and the impetus behind that creation deeply relational. KABOD pictures this pure and selfless love with the ancient symbol of a dance of the Three in One and the creation of beings to share in this dance. In order to make this possible, the power of choice had to be part of the equation. And this made it possible to choose self rather than selflessness.

KABOD follows the progression of created beings being offered this dance of love along with the choice to move away from the dance into a space ordered by pride rather than love. The utter beauty of the invitation into the dance is painted with the brushstrokes of another ancient symbol - the bride. Yet the creation consistently chooses to ignore this beauty and go its own way.

The most amazing part of this story is the decision made by the Three in One before any of these choices were made...the decision that one of the Three in One would lay down his life as a foundation for what was to be created. And that foundation made possible the reversal of those choices that were to come and the ultimate victory of the love that began the whole process.

An extraordinary amount of thanks goes to Carl Erdmann for his friendship and willingness to partner with me on this project which took years to complete as we hammered it out in the sparse spare time we had outside of our businesses and families. His vast musical arsenal provided a unique platform from which to share my thoughts.

CARL'S NOTES:
The last few years have seen a complete change in my usual paradigm of composing and editing music. Boyd invited me to compose and record KABOD, having worked with me on many other projects and knowing we were familiar with each other’s styles and techniques. The one thing that kept coming back to me was what I was composing music for…a story of the creation of all things in the universe. I found Boyd’s approach not only refreshing but inspiring.

The compositions were almost entirely started with the Chapman Stick and then built on with a room full of other instruments. This was my first project involving the Stick after ten years of studying how to play it. I bought and learned some new instruments in the process in order to give the music the nuances that I wanted. The result was a feeling of being truly involved with a project and its meaning.
