ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Shakespeare’s final and most musical play “The Tempest” is set on an island, which, throughout the years, many have claimed as their own, setting the play locally. In 1982 this island was the far remote, wild and and beautiful Newfoundland, with Figgy Duff composing and playing live their original score. Caliban became a native Beothuk (Newfoundland’s now extinct indigenous people) and actors spoke in their island dialect (believed by many to be closer to that of Shakespeare’s England than anywhere else in the world).

Here at long last is a recording of this legendary score. With celtic, classical, and folk rock overtones, and voiceovers from local actors, it is by turns wild, raw, tender and soft, echoing and underscoring Shakespeare’s poetry with the utmost skill and sensitivity, capturing the inherent magic in this beautiful play.

This is indeed the music of Shakespeare’s island; “sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not.”
