ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
"OHO" by trombonist Mark McGrain, bassist Nobu Ozaki, and percussionist Marcello Benetti features ten short, collective improvisations created live in a studio environment. Recorded in New Orleans on October 27 and 28, 2015 with the only predeterminate being duration; that each improvisation be concise, lasting no more than six or seven minutes. Track 10, "Spoils Of Espial," is the longest at 6:39 with most other tracks lasting between three and four minutes. This format enables the trio to focus on compositional development of the initial improvised motif and bring it to a timely conclusion rather than introducing subsequent motifs that might propel the improvisation into an extended, complex emprise.

01-Dig (4:25):
Groove and snap; a spare three note motif--we're out of the gate!

02-Raising Plato (3:40):
Upward, of the mist, arises both form and vacuum. Continuo of seeking, finding, and shaping. A palimpsest of serial reveals.

03-Adventurism (4:42):
It calls relentlessly--will not take "no" for an answer. "Jump in--let's go for a ride." Suddenly weightless then careening past complacency and smack into the next curious thing.

04-Found Objects 4:19):
Strewn across the plain of vast possibilities. Unearthed; boot soles scuffing off their muddy veil to become scavenged parts of a new machine.

05-Flak Factor (3:08):
Exploding debris; the fall-out following discovery.

06-Vasco"s Dance (3:30):
Ritualizing discovery.

07-Percolation (4:28):
Seeping up through airs and preconceptions--distilled of detractors, pure and palatable.

08-Virgin Echo (4:05):
The first reverberation and it's response; deja vu, new findings feeding back.

09-OHO (5:32):
Epiphany bursts upon the scene in a flash of marvel, making a blissful hum and devouring the highway.

10-Spoils of Espial (6:45):
Metal rattling bones--a mournful lament marking time, swirling aloft; memories nagging, an echoing surrender; lingering decay.
