496 West

496 West connects somewhere between contemporary jazz, R&B, soul, a sprinkling of the blues and of course, gospel jazz. The band’s versatility is evident in different formations that include, trio, quintet, octet, a full dance band - up to a full compliment of (14) fourteen Musicians studying and teaching the jazz art form are often part of the performance and outstanding vocalists compliment the mood with entertaining, dynamic and soulful harmonies.

In 2008, bandleader Charlie Wilson put in a call to fellow musicians about performing together at a smooth jazz concert. The confluence of events resulted in a contemporary instrumental and smooth jazz group that is all about artists pouring themselves into every note and providing live music in the Lansing area. Today’s instrumentation includes a collective of instruments from Soprano/ Tenor / Alto Sax; Keyboards, Guitar, Bass, Trumpet; Drums, vocals and a few surprises.

Although audiences have come to expect great music, fresh talent, and vibrant performances they have also grown to expect the unexpected.
The band’s configurations and highlighted instruments or vocals help define the 496 West’s style along with a variety combinations including–music for relaxing, music for listening, and dance music–from slow to jam .

The band has been in the studio working on their second studio album which is scheduled for release in the September 2014.

Originally active in the greater Lansing area, the group is expanding to other cities. Performance highlights include opening for jazz stalwarts Nick Colionne, Grammy-nominated Gerald Albright, the legendary Kirk Whalum (Grammy Award Winner), saxman Euge Groove, smooth jazz guitarist Tim Bowman and Grammy nominated international keyboardist, Bob Baldwin, high-energy saxman Eric Darius, baby soul saxophonist Jackiem Joyner and legendary vocalist Phil Perry. Audiences have ranged from 50 to 10,000.

The focus for 496 West is all about the music, the collaboration and complementing the beat.
