Adam Chikushin Tucker

Adam Chikushin Tucker began the study of classical Western flute at age 10 and the shakuhachi in 1983 at the Oberlin Conservatory. He soon earned the title of Chikushin (bamboo heart), became an assistant instructor in the Kinko school of shakuhachi, and received a Komuso Honsoku Certificate at the Hakata Fuke Zen Temple (Itchoken).

Adam has studied the shakuhachi in Japan as a Fulbright Fellow and a Monbusho Government scholar. He has also studied Korean music at the National Korean Academy of Culture. He has taught shakuhachi at Oberlin and the University of Hawai’i at Manoa and done extensive work in music therapy at hospitals in Japan. Adam attended the University of Washington Medical School, has a graduate degree in language education from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, and has publications in neurosurgery, language, and music education.
