Agnieszka Iwanska

About Agnieszka Iwanska

Agnieszka Iwanska is an accomplished and gifted jazz vocalist, composer and lyricist. Her sultry and sensitive signing style stands out as a fresh and exciting voice in contemporary jazz. As a vocalist, Agnieszka has been hailed as the “voice of promise” by noted jazz critic Howard Reich from the Chicago Tribune. Brad Walseth of WNUA-FM praised her style and performance by nothing that “Like Basia, Iwanska is a Polish singer who has taken on the Brazilian sound pioneered by Astrud Gilberto. She sings her well-written songs showing considerable ability, and charms the crowd with her fresh and honest approach.” Agnieszka is a graduate of the Jazz Studies program at the University of Katowice, Poland’s only accredited jazz program. While in Poland, Agnieszka had the opportunity to perform with some of the country’s top jazz talents including Mieczyslaw Szczesniak, Jan Smoczynski, Sebastian Frankiewicz and Daniel Biel, who play with Michael Urbaniak.

After arriving in the US, Agnieszka formed her own band; a quintet featuring some of Chicago’s talented jazz musicians. Working with keyboardist/composer Paul Scherer, Agnieszka has completed her first full-length CD of original material entitled "All That I Am." The CD features songs in both English and Polish, all written and arranged by Iwanska and Scherer. The Polish TV Polvision and Polsat 2 produced several programs about Agnieszka in 2008.

Iwanska received a prize Polonus 2008 as an Artist of a Year in most prestigious contest among the Polish community. Agnieszka and her band perform throughout the Chicago area, and have been featured artists in the annual All Soul’s Jazz Festival for the last four years. Among her numerous achievements, Agnieszka received first prize in the Krokus Jazz Festival and second prize in the International Competition of Jazz Vocalists in Zamosc, Poland. Agnieszka’s unique sound is not to be missed. Her unmistakable honesty and lack of pretension stand out as hallmarks of a talent worth getting to know.

Agnieszka Iwanska - "All That I Am"
All That I Am A sure cure for the melancholy blues, Polish-American Chicago-based singer Agnieszka Iwanska's new CD, "All That I Am," is a joyous romp that is like a breath of fresh air with its somewhat retro feel and unabashedly positive romantic spin. Is there a place in this harried modern world for music that seems to exist in an aura of dancing lightness? I sure as heck hope so. Strong songwriting, with music composed by keyboardist Paul Scherer, runs throughout the nine tunes here (three additional Polish language versions round out the twelve tracks). The melange of pop, Brazilian, and ' 70s-influenced funk jazz is delightful ear candy, centered by Scherer's tasteful synthesizers and pianos, and driven by the solid bass work of Scotty Manzo and the underrated Paul Townsend on drums. Saxophonist Scott Angst adds well-conceived solos, while Shawn Maxwell's brilliant flute takes "Thinking About You" into another realm. Songs like the title track, "Live Each Moment," "Love Around," "The Truth" and "Still Alive" and "Wonderland" will restore your joy with a combination of shimmering vocals, smooth sounds and subtle and seductive grooves.
