Akropolis Reed Quintet

Founded in 2009 and winners of five national chamber music prizes, the Akropolis Reed Quintet is a cutting edge ensemble which performs an innovative, living repertoire with acclaimed precision. In 2011 Akropolis took grand prize at the MTNA and Plowman chamber music competitions consecutively, and in 2012 they were a runner-up at the Yellow Springs National Chamber Music Competition, a silver medalist at the Fischoff Competition, and a bronze medalist at the International Chamber Music Competition held at the New England Conservatory. Akropolis’ dynamic concerts feature modern compositions framed by fresh arrangements of classical music spanning four centuries. Originating at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Akropolis is Tim Gocklin (oboe), Kari Dion (clarinet), Matt Landry (saxophone), Andrew Koeppe (bass clarinet), and Ryan Reynolds (bassoon).

At the heart of Akropolis’ new music initiatives are over 20 commissions of composers from around the world, including the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Turkey, Israel, Argentina, and Serbia. Each collaboration results from a unique commissioning project, including “High Speed Reed” (Akropolis' first full-length studio disc), “Unraveled” (the second full-length disc to be released March, 2014), and “Project Sonata.” Deeply invested in fortifying the reed quintet a fully-established ensemble type, Akropolis devised and leads the first ever reed quintet consortium, which will commission American composer Joel Puckett to create a reed quintet work to be performed by 13 reed quintets on 3 continents, the first endeavor of its kind for the reed quintet. Akropolis also produces a YouTube Web Premiere Series, which showcases new works and arrangements, as well as composer interviews for a live Internet audience. Furthering the construction of a new paradigm in chamber music, Akropolis created the Akropolis Collection, a catalog of reed quintet sheet music available at their online store.

For the 12/13 season Akropolis was the Ensemble-in-Residence with the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings, one of the United States’ premiere chamber music presenters, and was invited to be a Shouse Institute ensemble for the Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival. During the season Akropolis collaborated, through DCWS and the Oberlin Conservatory, to commission a multi-media reed quintet work composed by Eli Stine which tackled the topic of Alzheimer’s and Dementia by pairing Akropolis with a pre-recorded tape of skillfully mixed interviews and poems written by and gathered by Mr. Stine from Alzheimer’s and Dementia sufferers. In December 2012, Akropolis appeared by video in the Netherlands at Amsterdam’s PAN Festival to announce their winner of the 5th Annual Calefax Composers Competition, a selection they made from among 40+ new reed quintet works. Their winning piece, Elliott Bark’s “Autumn in New York,” has been performed throughout 2013 and graces Akropolis’ second disc, Unraveled. Akropolis will judge for the competition again in December, 2013. In fall 2013, Akropolis appeared at Grand Valley State University and Wright State University to perform and conduct masterclasses on commission collaboration, the business of chamber music, and chamber music performance.

Wholly committed to reaching out and fortifying the next generation of music mavericks, Akropolis created the 2013 Fall Education Tour, funded by over $5,000 raised by a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign. The tour visited 10 schools in Michigan serving underprivileged youth or under-funded arts programs. With lessons custom-designed for each grade level, Akropolis has musical offerings for every student, regardless of their musical background or level of training. Ranging from interactive melody games for elementary students, masterclasses for middle and high school ensembles, and composer forums and business workshops for college musicians, Akropolis harnesses its creativity, energy, and versatility to make music a personal and lasting experience for all students.

Akropolis delivers passionate, energized, and unforgettable performances on a variety of series both traditional and contemporary in nature. A typical performance consists of several works performed by memory. Their current program offerings—“Akropolis Unraveled,” “Mad Music,” “Musical Snapshots,” and “Under the Influence”—juxtapose traditional and contemporary music within themed arcs to leave the audience with a completely remade vision of both new and old music. All Akropolis performances are interactive, including opportunities for audience feedback, informative introductions, and insatiable performance chemistry.
