Angela Blacklaw

Angela Blacklaw is an engaging blues, soul and jazz vocalist and songwriter based in London. Her accomplished vocal style is unique but has a purity and an accuracy of pitch that has been most often compared to Lisa Stansfield, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Eva Cassidy and even Joni Mitchell, although her performance on Vanilla Love (One Step Remix) has been likened to Carmel, Sian Evans and Sarah McLachlan.

Angela is an English/German hybrid who, just to confuse things, was brought up in Scotland. She began her performing career as an actress and although her love of music won out, she retains an effortless performing style and stage presence, which enable her to connect in a warm and authentic way with a live audience.

She is a regular performer at London venues as a solo singer, usually supported by skilled keyboard player Mojo Wellington, where together they perform a relaxed and spicy mix of jazz standards and soulful blues, as well as acclaimed original songs.

Angela also performs in collaboration with fellow vocalist Gyongyi Salla in the harmonic duo “Deuxfuse” which focuses on harmonically rich vocals applied to soulful or jazz covers of popular works as well as to their original material.

In addition she is a founder member of the Mike King Choir, London's new innovative and unique vocal group whose energy, rich harmonies and uplifting performances are already making an impact on audiences in the UK; the choir, made up of 35 talented singers, stands for friendship, unity and a love of music.

Angela is a versatile and accomplished songwriter focusing on soul, blues and jazz but who flirts with other genres and is regularly asked to collaborate with other writers. Her love of travel is often reflected in her writing, some of which has a distinctively international flavour. Angela’s influences are varied and include: Aretha Franklin, Jill Scott, Bill Withers, Talking Heads, Eartha Kitt, Mary Coughlan, Stevie Wonder, Billie Holiday, Suzi Quatro, Susheela Raman, Steely Dan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Kate Bush, James Brown, John Lennon, Funkadelic, Amy Winehouse, Prince, Fleetwood Mac, Take 6, Carole King, John Legend and Rachelle Ferrell.
