Ann Moss

Ann Moss is an ardent and acclaimed champion of contemporary vocal music who performs and collaborates with a dynamic array of American composers. Her high, silvery, flexible voice has been singled out by Opera News for “beautifully pure floated high notes” and by San Francisco Classical Voice for “powerful expression” and “luminous tone.” Her newest album Love Life (Angels Share Records, 2016), produced and recorded by multi-GRAMMY® award winner Leslie Ann Jones at Skywalker Sound, features music by Jake Heggie, Liam Wade, Lennon/McCartney, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan with pianists Heggie and Steven Bailey, cellist Emil Miland, violinist Isaac Allen, and GRAMMY® award winning ensemble Chanticleer. Her debut album Currents (Angels Share Records, 2013), also produced and recorded by Jones at Skywalker, features a dream team of collaborators from the chamber, new music, and jazz communities. Moss has also recorded on PARMA, Naxos, Albany, Navona Records and Jaded Ibis Productions labels.

In addition to working closely with well-known composers such as Jake Heggie, John Harbison, Kaija Saariaho, Aaron Jay Kernis and Wayne Peterson, Ann seeks out and performs works by new and emerging voices at forums, festivals and concert series across the USA. She has sung premieres and contemporary repertoire as a featured soloist with Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Earplay, Eco Ensemble, One Art Ensemble, M2B, New Music Works, San Francisco Lyric Opera, the Ives String Quartet, Alexander String Quartet, Hausmann Quartet, Sanford Dole Ensemble, New Music Works, Composers in Red Sneakers, at the Sacramento Festival of New American Music, Fresno New Music Festival, PARMA Festival, SF Song Festival, Other Minds Festival, Switchboard Music Festival, Sonic Harvest, and CNMAT, among others.

As co-founder and Artistic Director of CMASH, a new-music repertory group dedicated to fostering and sustaining long-term collaborative relationships between composers and performers, Moss has been personally responsible for the creation and premiere of over ninety art songs, works of vocal chamber music and operatic roles, from composers such as Kenneth Froelich, Heather Gilligan, Kurt Erickson, Jared Redmond, Sanford Dole, Liam Wade, Miriam Miller, Vartan Aghababian, Weslie Brown, Garrett Shatzer, John Grimmett, Andrew McManus, Joshua Fishbein, Jessica Rugani, Sarah Wald, Allen Shearer, Carlos Gamboa, and Erik Jekabson. Moss served on the 2008 & 2011 faculty at CSU Summer Arts’ Composer/Performer Collaboration Workshop, and has delivered lectures on composition for the solo voice at MIT, Longy School of Music of Bard College, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, UC Davis, Sacramento State University, CSU Los Angeles, UT Pan America and Cosumnes River College.

A native of Boston and a graduate of the Longy School of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, Ann currently resides and teaches in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, violist Justin Ouellet. She has participated in Master Classes with esteemed artists including Jose Van Dam, Nathan Gunn, Graham Johnson, Martin Katz, Jake Heggie, John Harbison, Craig Smith, and Barbara Kilduff. Private teachers include Sheri Greenawald, Wendy Hillhouse, Anna Gabrieli and Rodney Gisick; coaches include Steven Bailey, Brian Moll, Paul Hersh and Wayman Chin.
