Anthony Leonard Pierre

Anthony Leonard Pierre left Kingston, Jamaica W.I. for the United States in 1974, where he attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, New York and graduated with Merit honors in 1977. He then attended the following colleges, Fordham University, Lehman College, Madison Area Technical College and University of Wisconsin-Madison. Mr. Pierre also attended and has given hundreds of continuing educational courses pertaining to the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning industry where he established his professional career.

In 1979, along with two friends, he started Ital Corner, one of the first, if not the first radio show in the Mid-Western U.S. featuring Jamaican Reggae music. Due to its popularity, he was subsequently given two other program slots on W.O.R.T-88.9 FM in Madison, Wisconsin - Dreadlocks Corner and Tropical Rhythms – which he expanded to include Calypso, and African Music, all with a talk and information sharing format. With the growing popularity of these programs, he was subsequently invited to start similar programs on college campuses throughout the Midwest. Over the years, he has contributed his time and knowledge to local radio programs, disc jockeys, and promoters throughout the Mid-West and Southeastern United States.

In September 1980, Anthony assisted in the promotion and production of a Burning Spear concert to a sold-out audience at Madison Wisconsin’s Civic Center, first of its kind Reggae show in the Midwest. This groundbreaking success opened the doors for similar activities producing and/or promoting Reggae performances throughout the Midwest (Ohio to Minnesota), Virginia, North and South Carolina, Atlanta, and Florida. Mr. Pierre also helped to spearhead many Music shows featuring the diverse student population at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; many Music Festivals in Milwaukee Wisconsin and in Chicago Illinois; and the launching of many Caribbean Shows in North Carolina.

In the aforementioned regions, Anthony promoted and/or produced many Reggae dances and concerts in local venues. As the saying went, if he could get electricity in there, then a dance is a must - legal or otherwise. A born Jamaican whose productions drew an international audience, he was also known for selecting tunes from the world’s musical genre. Anthony Leonard Pierre says his proudest ‘move’ is when he decided to stop “frontin’ fe dem big-guys/promoters” and go out on his own. The first being, The Mighty Diamonds concert at Turner Hall in Madison, Wisconsin in 1984. That sold out crowd has followed Mr. Pierre for years as he spread the Roots Reggae doctrine. A high energy, fiscally conscious, and goal-driven individual, Anthony Leonard Pierre has approached each new business challenge with his intrinsic flair for innovation, creative problem-solving, and measured risk-taking to drive consistent bottom-line improvements in his music ventures.

Despite his love for music as a radio disc jockey and music promoter and producer for over 30 years, Anthony Leonard Pierre doesn’t talk much about his Reggae (Calypso, African and R&B) selecting abilities. But in truth, that is what has made him into the giant he has become. “Bwoy, d’amount a’speaker an’ record box mi lift up, is a-shame! People always a’ ask why mi hand middle dem suh rough… if dem only know!” The mannerism this career crowns, has titled him, Ja’Tony, Big-Man, Don, Bad-Man, Roots-Man to Reggae-Man.

Anthony says his scariest memory in life was in the early days of the crack epidemic, he started “a’ withdrawal spot inna a’man’s apartment; bwoy, if mi never strong dem same wyan wou’da dust I’man out!” As he gets serious “when someone hears the content in my writings, they many times think it is just a story, but to I - it is reality. Writing is how I balance my strides.”

He continues to communicate in a consistent demeanor and will defend his radical views in highly complex matters. Known as a strategist in handling complex engineer issues of his work, Anthony make sure that his set goals are aligned with corporate objectives while driving efforts to keep himself motivated. Anthony’s goal of becoming a writer and entertainer serve as motivating factors towards a lifelong accomplishment of his personal and professional goals. Thus, Anthony’s prolific interest in writing both lyrics and prose has enabled him to script ten volumes of books of which three were self-published in 1993. In realizing his zeal and love for music, Anthony began to showcase his talent in various local venues, which led to him producing and releasing four CDs, Mind Revolution, R.O.W., On That Day, and Black Fruit. Mr. Pierre’s songs provides a combination of rhythmic undercurrent that bears testament to his radical views, and punctuates throughout with elements of Reggae, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Pop and Rhythm and Blues.

As a community activist, Mr. Pierre has founded many student and community organizations from Madison, Wisconsin to Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Two such organizations, the Caribbean Association of Madison and the African Association of Madison, started in 1978-9, are still in existence today. He has been involved in many other community activities including tutoring, mentorship, food distribution, community rebuilding, and the educational outreach program at Oxford Federal Penitentiary that prepared prisoners for an easier transition back into the community.

With all the above-mentioned experiences and accomplishments, Anthony truly possesses the characteristics of a systematic and critical-thinking individual. His achievements in his job of over 30 years could vouch for his qualifications as a Senior H.V.A.C. System Designer and Senior Systems Coordinator. Anthony unremittingly displays his commitment to honesty and reliability in all his endeavors, demonstrating unparelled work ethics and the highest level of standards and character that encourage a positive work environment.
Anthony Leonard Pierre currently resides in North Carolina, and is a proud father of five grown children.
