Antz Band

Minority report, for “Antz” is in fact similar to throwing oneself on a minefield. One year has passed since “Antz” came into existence. “Antz” was created by a few bright young minds frustrated by the unrestrained domination of traditional and classic genre over Afghanistan’s music. These open thinkers come not from the capital, Kabul, but from the periphery. “Antz” is mainly concerned with music performance. This is the first time in the history of this country that a group of open minds think about defining modern music other than traditional classic genre. This is parallel to the time that Afghanistan’s music floats in the sea of Indian music.

“Antz” took their initial gist from the variety of folkloric Afghan music. Peripatetic local Afghan singers mainly address social issues and their romantic songs are bound to their geographical traditions.
On the other hand, modern music, particularly Rock ‘n’ Roll, Jazz or Blues were not experienced ambitiously in the history of Afghan music. “Antz” is working to melt the traditional folkloric Afghan music with modern Jazz, Blues and Rock, which will carry the taste of the two worlds while keeping the tradition of addressing social issues and concerns. This band is working in Afghanistan in conditions, which is defined by regular terrorist attacks, suicide bombers and losses of lives and where a significant portion of the society considers music to be ‘Haraam,’ forbidden.

“Antz” thinks to revolutionize the Afghan music. The ultimate goal is to help the static traditional Afghan music move and join the caravan of world music.

The album “Guzarish-e-Aqaliat” [Minority Report] contains three semi-romantic and three socio-political songs. The focus of “Antz” is to deal with issues of divisions, contradictions and religious worldviews of the traditional Afghan society. In these songs, the Afghan world is presented with all its beauties and ugliness and the path that the idea of militarism has put in front of the country.
