Black Olive Jazz

Black Olive Jazz brings a Mediterranean feel to jazz, featuring the sultry vocals and exotic finger cymbals of Kay Kostopoulos, and serpentine phrases of local jazz legend Noel Jewkes. Noel Jewkes also plays tenor, alto, clarinet and flute. The group performs a wide range of jazz: swing, standards, blues, latin and originals. Kay teaches at Stanford University, and is also a professional actress and dancer and director who has performed in plays and musicals in many regional and Bay Area theaters Her theatrical background lends an emotional sensitivity to her lush and sensuous three-octave vocal range.

Kay Kostopoulos, an elegant singer, actress and Stanford professor, has a voice inspired by the golden age of jazz. Kay is also a multi percussionist, paying homage to such enduring masters as Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie and their groundbreaking offerings to the “world music” genre. She has been a featured artist with master musicians at venues and jazz festivals all around the San Francisco Bay Area, including the Sonoma, Napa, Healdsburg, Vallejo, Sacramento, Palo Alto, and Fillmore Jazz Festivals.
