Bob Jensen

Bob Jensen Bio

A gifted poet with a powerful imagination.
Shane Howard, Australia

Canadian born and bred Bob Jensen has a lifetime of writing under his belt. In his youth he was a traveling folk singer and made one recording called First Time Since August, and later went on to write the award-winning novel, Matchbox Funeral. Upon moving to Prince Edward Island to start a family, he started a booking agency, and over the years has worked with some of the greatest legends of folk and blues, luminaries such as Pete Seeger (USA), Johnny Clegg (South Africa), Bruce Cockburn (Canada), former Rolling Stones lead guitarist Mick Taylor and American blues legends, Pine Top Perkins and Luther Johnson, both alumni of the famed Muddy Waters Band of the 1960s and 70s. More than two decades in the music business resulted in many collaborations with artists as diverse as The Chieftains and Hollywood legend, Mickey Rooney. In 2008, a chance conversation Jensen had with Rolling Stones manager Michael Cohl lead to the Pete Seeger 90th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Some 50 artists attended including headliner, Bruce Springsteen.

In recent years, with his children now grown up, Jensen has refocused his efforts on writing. He has collaborated on songwriting with many artists around the world, including England’s legendary Martin Simpson, Zimbabwe’s Black Umfolosi and Nashville singer-songwriter, Alan Rhody who has had #1 radio hits in America and Australia and who has been covered by dozens of country music legends such as George Jones, The Oakridge Boys, Tanya Tucker and Suzy Bogus. In May of 2019 Jensen released an audio book of 15 spoken word poems entitled A Blossom for Job.

Jensen is currently working on several projects, including a spoken word and music audio book called Other Voices, which has more than a dozen artists from around the world performing his poetry. Some artists have chosen to read poems, while others are turning the poetry into songs. Participants include Australia’s Shane Howard, British folk legends, Oysterband, New York City blues icon Guy Davis and triple Grammy Award nominee, Claire Lynch of Nashville. Jensen is very excited that the project will also include American war-poet John Guzlowski, who has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer Prize.

“(Hommage a Chagall is) Genius. Really. Best book of poems I've read in years.” Pulitzer-nominated American poet, John Guzlowski.

In 2017, Jensen completed a book of 100 poems interpreting the paintings of Marc Chagall, an artist he has loved since he was a child. Last year he traveled to Montreal, where he spent five weeks writing at a giant Chagall exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts. The result was a book called Hommage a Chagall, with a foreword by John Guzlowski. The work is currently in the hands of his agent and is being pitched to publishers around the world. Several other projects are in the works. In 2020, Black Umfolosi will release an entire CD of Jensen’s poetry, which they are working into a cappella songs. They will tour this project in Africa, Europe, America and Canada.

In August of 2018 Jensen performed his spoken word poetry at the FolkEast Festival in Suffolk, England and was immediately invited to go back to play larger venues. He has recently started performing his spoken word poetry on CBC Radio and will be doing live shows in Alberta and New Brunswick in 2019.
