The foothills of Appalachia surround Middletown, my hometown, but whatever else it's in the middle of I couldn't tell you.

When I was eighteen I moved south for schooling, a little Quaker college in Carolina called Guilford. I studied philosophy and other letters there. I fancied Guilford to be sometimes haunted, but not by malicious wraiths or apparitions. A certain tree in Guilford's woods was said to be a marker, a true and silent beacon of the underground railroad. Guilford is a warm and honest place. I've always thought myself blessed with some talent for writing—done so since I was a child for the escape of it. But I was unable to compose any verses in school that weren't fit for burning, having exhausted myself with a younger lover's poems.

I lost half a year after graduation and I wont go into it.

Shortly after Christmas, 2007, I went to Minnesota to live there a while. I did that on account of my being allergic to spirits, that is to liquor—an affliction brought upon by demons who sought to do me in. I needed a hard winter and a gentle fellowship to put them down. “No one comes here in winter 'less they're lookin' for something,” a merchant in St. Paul said to me. February was so cold that you could not forget that you were breathing. I found something precious in Minnesota.
My dearest friends offered me their warmth and a room; so I moved back to North Carolina after five months up north. I settled in, put a blanket on my bed, found work.

And then one day in the fall I picked up a guitar. Played till my fingers swelled and cracked and I taught myself that way. I learned a few songs and then began to write my own. Been singing them since. I dare say that music saved my life. I do it for medicine; all I hope for is that the songs I write and sing will move somebody. That happens and I'm satisfied.

I'm in New York City now and about to make a go of it. Truly hope to see you there.
