Carol Lipnik

Carol Lipnik is acclaimed as one of New York's most individualistic, rivetingly virtuosic singers. With her stunning four-octave range, subtle wit and charismatic stage presence, she draws equally on 70s art-rock, theatre music, Eastern mysticism and the decaying phantasmagoria of the Coney Island where she was born and raised. She's also a distinctive songwriter, with five albums to her credit. Her latest album, Almost Back to Normal, a collaboration with keyboardist Matt Kanelos and violinist/producer Jacob Lawson, weaves a magical web of Debussy-on-opium textures, insistent minimalism, soaring neo-romantic angst and enigmatic lyrics that allude ominously to contemporary issues like global warming and eco-disaster. Lipnik's voice leaps octaves with jaunty, verve or sudden, operatic agitation as Kanelos works mysterious and subtly devious variations, blending magical tones from an 1895 Steinway grand piano along with Lawson's sometimes terse, sometimes lush orchestration. Throughout the album, Lipnik infuses her enigmatic, often plaintive songs with a subtle, surrealistic, often absurdist humor.
"I think of this group of songs as talismans and shields to take with you into battle  - the battle being today's increasingly uncertain world," says Lipnik.
Lipnik credits a residency at the Yaddo artists' retreat for much of the material here. The album, whose primary tracks were recorded at jazz mecca Peter Karl Studios, was made possible by a grant from the Peter S. Reed Foundation.

About Carol Lipnik:
Born and raised in Coney Island, Brooklyn, Lipnik originally studied painting at Pratt Iustitute and the Artist's League before finding her voice -all four-plus octaves of it - as a singer. She has released five previous albums, including four with her carnivalesque chamber pop/art-rock band Spookarama, featuring jazz cult hero Dred Scott on piano. She has also collaborated with legendary performance artist John Kelly, for his 2011 piece The Escape Artist. Lipnik currently resides in Hell's Kitchen, New York.
