Carolann Brevard – Greatness

“A future classic! The album people were waiting for without knowing it.”
-- CD Baby Review (from Harry Spelt)

Carolann Brevard’s first recording in her own name, Greatness, is a labor of love and talent, a lifetime in the making.

Carolann hails from New Jersey, the daughter of a loving home, a child of the Baptist church. She studied chemistry at Hampton University, but she has always returned to the magical chemistry between a great voice and a deeply rooted lyric and melody. Through years of “paying her dues,” of studio vocals, backing a wide range of soul and hip-hop artists, through the highlights – performing on New York’s annual WBLS Dance-a-thon, commanding the stage of the Apollo Theater – Carolann has forged her own pathway in music.

Greatness. Both the word and this recording speak of human striving, of achievement. “Greatness” also refers to the rhythm and blues tradition, this fabulous pathway of passionate human expression. Now this is Carolann Brevard’s turn, to dig down into her musical tradition, to speak honestly and sing gloriously, to tell her own stories, to weave her own musical spells.

“Love it!!!! Amazing voice, Carol!!!!!”
“Great album. Great singer/songwriter. Great musicianship.”

While pursuing a full life – daughter, mother, professional, lover of life and lover of love – Carolann has forever been drawn to song. As a child, she grew up to the soundtrack of her father’s classic r&b records (not to scratch!). Carolann sang in church, she sang professionally, she sang for sheer joy and affirmation, driven by the need to reach out, while exploring her own truths, in glorious song.

Carolann lends a rich voice, mature and feisty, to the songs she has written through her years searching for love, for relevance and integrity, for musical splendor. Working with longtime partners, great musicians with whom she has shared such leading stages as New York’s Blue Note, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and Miami’s Jazz in the Gardens, Carolann Brevard gives us new soul-besotted classics fitting firmly within the hard-won, radiant grooves of classic r&b.

(The song) “’Possession’ is going to get some people pregnant!”

Well, maybe. Still, as Carolann Brevard has begun headlining, at New York’s Bitter End and New Jersey’s Symphony Hall and Lounge 58, with far more to come, people are responding, passionately, to the glories of one special woman, sharing her lifetime of song, in the resplendent lineage of most soulful music, ever.
