Chris Matarazzo

Chris Matarazzo is a writer, musician and composer.

He studied composition with his father, composer and arranger, Joe Matt. His mother, Vivian Matarazzo, (aka Vivian Carol) is a singer, recording artist and pianist. He has worked professionally as a drummer, keyboardist and singer in Philadelphia area bands since his later teens, both in "club" and musical theater settings. He currently studies classical guitar with guitarist and historical intrumentalist, Kathleen Mayes. Chris has written and recorded numerous songs and worked as a session musician for some twenty years. In 1997, he wrote and produced the score to the independent film, the offbeat and darkly comical psychodrama, Surrender Dorothy, written and directed by Kevin DiNovis.

Chris's second CD, American Sketches, is a collection of impressionistic piano pieces that "paint pictures" based on the composer's observations of Americna life -- from the simplest scenes to the most grand and dramatic. His first CD, Hats & Rabbits, on which he wrote, arranged and performed all instruments and lead vocals, is also available.

As an undergraduate and as graduate student, Chris studied writing with novelist Lisa Zeidner, poet/playwright Afaa Michael Weaver and novelist James Wilcox. He earned his MA, in literature with an emphasis on creative writing, from Rutgers University in 1994 and is currently a teacher of English literature and writing on the high school and college levels. He is the author of two, as yet, unpublished novels: The Second Fire and These Kids.

Currently, he writes for the groundbreaking online magazine When Falls the Coliseum and he maintains a blog of his own, Hats and Rabbits (created as he was working on the material for his album of the same name). The name comes from Chris's notion that the world contains only two kinds of things: those that are hidden and those that hop around in plain view and that both the obvious and the hidden are easily missed. On this blog, he attempts, three times per week, to explore both types of things, with the help of his astute readers.

Chris's goal has always been to first be good at life and then to improve and remain energetic in his creative endeavors. (He realizes he has a long way to go on both counts.) He remains committed to creating the best art and, more importantly, to raising the best children he can.

He currently lives in New Jersey with his wife, Karen, their two boys and seventy-poound lap dog named Krimpet.
