I am a yoga monk, musician, writer and meditation teacher with the spiritual movement Ananda Marga (which means "The Path of Bliss" in the Sanskrit language). I now live in California, but I’m originally from New Zealand, where I started playing music at age four, and began composing on the piano when I was eleven. I then branched out into playing other instruments as well, including the cello, clarinet, trumpet and euphonium (a kind of small tuba). After 13 years of piano study, I switched to guitar and vocals. This was really just a practical decision. Pianos are awkward to carry around!

I spent a year at university, majoring in English literature, which proved useful in writing my lyrics. That year I became fascinated with meditation and oriental mysticism, and left my university, and my country, to go to India and Nepal to study in the yoga tradition. In 1979, I was ordained as a yoga monk. Quite a detour from the expected course for a New Zealand lad.

I continue to write songs, record, and perform. As of this writing in 2019 I have produced seven albums. Three of my own songs, three of spiritual chanting, and one album of Indian spiritual songs. I have published two books. One on meditation, which I call my ‘sensible book’, and a comical fantasy novel, which I call my ’silly book’.

Most of my songs are about spiritual ideas and experiences or about ecological or human rights issues. I have been fortunate to be invited to perform all over the world. My fifteen minutes of fame was at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, where my spur-of-the-moment Brazilian band and I played to 5000 people. Huge thanks to the many people who helped make all of this possible and especially to the many beautiful musicians who’ve been kind enough to play with me, on stage or in the studio. You might have heard of some of them: Daevid Allen (RIP), founder of Soft Machine and Gong, Harry Williamson of Gong, Paul Winter and maestro saxophonist Premik Russell Tubbs who played with Santana, John Mclauchlin, Whitney Houston and more.

I hope you enjoy listening to my music half as much as I enjoyed creating it.

Much love and spiritual greetings ❤️
