Dexter Payne Quintet

Dexter Payne has six albums under his own name (see dexterpayne.com) and appears on others as a sideman, arranger, composer and writer. The debut of Dexter Payne Quintet PRA VOCE received 4 stars in DownBeat magazine and won him a Pathways to Jazz Grant for a new recording. It’s now available here - JAZZ FOR ALL. The quintet has matured and the new album is even better than the last, by some accounts.

With the notable addition of talented vocalist, Elena Camerin Young,
the instrumental line up is the same:

Dexter Payne - clarinet
Bill Kopper - 6&7string guitar
Dave Willey - accordion
Victor Mestas Perez - piano
Raoul Rossiter - drums & percussion

Payne cant help it, he is intrigued by a lot of different kinds of music. Blues, African, Balkan, Brasil and ... ? Please, don’t play him any cool CDs or he might take up something else. His musical career has taken excursions all over the map, but he never hurries. The trail he leaves is scattered with gems, and many are available here! Along the way he has met and wizards and drunk from deep wells. Look around CD Baby for a taste:

ANOTHER FEELING, DISK TUM DERREI, CELEBRATING OUR TIME TO REMEMBER, FLYING HOME with Thiago de Mello
For some time, he’s been totally immersed in sounds of Brasil and that country's tradition of clarinet. Before the Quintet albums, there was his solo debut INSPIRATION with Antonio Mello (and Thiago de Mello). Followed by the 4 CDs with the late Gaudencio Thiago de Mello (above). These won him recognition in the Downbeat Readers Poll ten top clarinetists for 2004 & 2006. Dexter Payne is not about speed or technical fireworks, his passion is music.

WHEN IM GONE by Judy Roderick
While you’re listening, don’t miss the retrospective re-release of Judy Roderick & the Forbears featuring Dr. John ( and including Washboard Chaz.) These tapes from the mid 80s are a glimpse of the musical culmination of Dexter’s 16 years with his late partner and her amazing pen/voice.

ON OUR WAY TO MEMPHIS Lionel Young Band
On a side trip, he won the 2011 International Blues Challenge in Memphis with the Lionel Young Band. Violinist and vocalist Young is the only two time IBC winner in history, in the solo/duo and the band category... they were judged first out of 110 bands. Their 5 piece touring band took no prisoners for 2 years on the north american blues festival circuit. Listen to.

VILLAGE SQUARED Meg York
Oh yeah, and Rom music from Macedonian & Serbia, like the with another great clarinetist, Meg York plus Jesse Manno and Dave Willey.
