Flatbed

The Story of Flatbed

There is some debate as to the exact historical moment when Rock and Roll was born in America, but most agree it was conceived at the crossroads of Blues and Country music in the years following World War II. Buffalo, NY original Americana band Flatbed taps deep into these early influences and augments their style further by including highlights from the last sixty years of popular music to form a unique yet approachable roots rock sound.

From humble beginnings as an acoustic song writing trio, Joelle Labert (vocals), Michael Tinsmon (bass), and Derek Bassett (vocals & guitars) received accolades from a local music scene generally inhabited by cover bands and tribute shows. After successful opening sets for such national acts as Freakwater, Trampled By Turtles, Carbon Leaf, Al and the Transamericans, Quick Sand, Grady and Bobby Bare, Jr., the group decided to continue embracing the historical path of American music by adding drums, electric guitar, mandolin and lap steel guitar to the mix. Working under the name Flatbed, the project expanded on their existing song writing with more energetic live performances, which helped bolster their audiences and earn multiple Buffalo Music Award nominations in the last 7 years.

The 2007 release of their eponymously titled studio recording, Flatbed "revealed an instantly likable, home-brewed, country-based collection of songs splitting the difference between the Cosmic American Music of Gram Parsons and New Riders of the Purple Sage and the folk-based country of Emmylou Harris" - Jeff Miers, The Buffalo News

After the departure of a few early band members, Flatbed settled into a more streamlined roster in the fall of 2008 with the addition of seasoned drummer Ian Belknap and long-time friend Nathan Montague on harmonica and acoustic guitar. Following Ian’s departure in the spring of 2010 Flatbed signed veteran free agent drummer and vocalist, Thom Davis. This new lineup has added more 3, 4 and even 5-part harmonies to the mix.

In 2011 Flatbed celebrates the release of their latest studio recording entitled Scratches and Dents. Offering a wide range of Americana styles, Scratches and Dents reflects Flatbed’s eclectic ability to incorporate many of rock and roll’s earliest influences into a modern original sound. Much like the history of rock and roll itself, Flatbed developed organically from folk styled singer/songwriter beginnings to their present energetic, electric live performances all the while maintaining that “the song” is still the most important element of their music.

Over the last seven years Flatbed has seen their share of personnel changes, but the strength of their current line up comes from decades of live musical experience and a genuine camaraderie that is easily recognizable on stage. Flatbed’s members are: Joelle Labert on vocals, Michael Tinsmon on bass and vocals, Thom Davis on drums and vocals, Nathan Montague on guitar, harmonica, and vocals, and Derek Bassett on guitar and vocals.

Having multiple song writers in the band, Flatbed has a seemingly never-ending list of original material as well as a growing song list of well-loved American rock, country, and blues classics to perform for its ever expanding fan base. With their combined stage experience, the members of Flatbed are as comfortable in the smallest honky-tonk and juke joint in your city as they are on the largest outdoor festival stages in the country. So check out Scratches and Dents, and come out to see a live Flatbed show for yourself.
