Grievous Angels

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Grievous Angels epitomize that laid back funky California sound, putting their own distinctive spin on what they call psychedelic reggae-soul melodia. Grievous Angels create timeless, supremely melodic music for the ages; where unique elements of retro and modern share a dynamic space, creating a jazzy and soulful blend of reggae and rock that is seemingly outside the lines of history as we have experienced it.

Grievous Angels’ latest 13-track release, UNDEFEATED, is a funky evocative mix of rock, jazz and folk; a beautiful hybrid of rock and soul with an underlying reggae groove that blends the hypnotic rhythms of Bob Marley and the psychedelic soul of Jimi Hendrix. The opening song, Can U Help Me?, leads you into the exotic musical world inhabited by the band, with its funky swinging folk groove and dreamy violin playing. Beautiful Mind continues the vibe with a jazzy folk flavor, ethereal harmony vocals, and more exotic strings. Mr. Brown ups the psychedelic soul-funk factor with soulful minor-key rhythm guitars, tight, ‘in the pocket’ bass and drums, and a scorching, red hot guitar solo. Losing Proposition is about as mainstream as the band gets on this album and even then, the song is distinctly Grievous Angels’ version of mainstream: dreamy soulful pop with a taut rhythmic bass and drum groove. (Love is a) Battlefield, the only cover song on the album, is Grievous Angels’ unique take on a classic song, giving it an up-tempo Jamaican ska meets Sade feel. The band shifts gears a bit on 2 lives @ 1nce, bringing some funky 60’s soul with horns and jazzy harmonies to mix. Grievous Angels round out this affair with Chicken Burrito and Brand Nu Retro changing gears and grooves from experimental jazzy folk to indie-rock reggae; ending with the melodic psychedelic instrumental, Panga Song, inspired by and dedicated to the band's long-time, fallen mascot, leaving you in a trance for hours after.

The disparate music genres on UNDEFEATED are held together by the sheer musicianship of the band members: Bobby Cuff, vocals, guitars and songs; Karlee A. Tittle Cuff, vocals and strings; Damion Presogna, bass; Ari Atari, drums, and their desire to experiment and fuse musical boundaries. Their hypnotic grooves wash over you and the twists and turns of the arrangements of each song keep the listener engaged at all times. Grievous Angels don’t sound like anyone else. They are working across musical genres, binding them all together to produce their own distinctive sound. This is the true California sound.
