Heather Maxwell

Heather Maxwell is an American singer/songwriter, music radio host/ producer, and ethnomusicologist.

Her music is adventurous and anchored in the jazz and African folk music worlds.

She is multilingual and sings in several languages, including French, Spanish, Swahili, Bambara, Luo and Xhosa. She plays piano, and traditional West African instruments.

Heather lived in West Africa for five years studying music and touring with local musicians. She recorded two albums there; Keneya Ji (Mali 1991) and Pygmé (Côte d'Ivoire 1992).

A two-time Fulbright Award winner, she later earned a Doctorate in ethnomusicology specialising in African music. She released her third album Africa Soul (US 2011), and several singles and featuring.

Since 2012, millions in Africa listen to Heather's voice each weekend as she hosts Voice of America's pan-African music program "Music Time in Africa." She visits Africa regularly, making on-air appearances with local DJs, collecting music stories, and performing and recording with local artists.
