Human Radio

In Memphis, anything can happen and usually does. Entire genres of music were born there to be beamed out to the rest of the world. So when five musical pals started Human Radio there in 1988, there were no boundaries other than: have we done it before? A modern rock trio plus synthesizers and electric violin, leaning away from the blues/R&B/soul/indie tradition, with cleverly topical lyrics, was probably the least Memphis-sounding thing that could possibly happen there and then, and yet.....praise Sam worked. The band was signed within the year, debuting on Columbia Records in 1990 with their eponymous record, and soon touring to support their Billboard-charting single "Me & Elvis," a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Memphis' favorite son. Though the record and tour were a modest success, Columbia declined their option for a second record, and after relocating to Nashville in 1990 the band recorded a second unreleased record, while continuously touring, before disbanding in 1992. But 23 years later they reunited for a benefit concert, and re-kindled the long-time relationship, resulting in fruitful writing sessions, a more universal lyrical perspective (not quite so clever, that is), and a successful Indiegogo campaign. The result is "Samsara," which revisits the visionary sound of the band, and reboots it into the future. An audio experience designed to be listened to in entirety in sequence, Samsara hearkens back to an earlier time where one took the time to savor the fruits of the vinyl. Today, however, Human Radio beams out the message to sentient beings everywhere: it's a beautiful universe. Let's explore it together....
