Iñaki Arakistain

With four of his own discs on the market, “Tiempos de búsqueda” (New Mood Jazz 2008), “Plan B” (Youkali Music 2010), “Saxual” (Youkali Music 2014), “Another Road” (MALAX Records 2018) Iñaki Arakistain has become a musician with an extensive career path, whose standing has been recognised both by the specialised press as well as other artists who have collaborated and/or shared the stage with him. Arakistain opens us to a musical concept unprecedented until now in Spain made by a saxophonist, in which Groove music coexists with influences from Brazilian music, Latin Funk, as well as recently merging Flamenco with those styles; thus enriching its new projects united by the common language of jazz.

In his facet as a jazz artist, he has played and shared the stage with musicians of the calibre of Jayme Marques, Miguel Blanco, Jerry González, Danilo Peréz, Sean Levitt, Mark Redford, Jean Marie Ekay, Benny Green, Lewis Nasch and many more; with Spanish groups, such as la Calle Caliente, Red House, Wagon Cookin, and also as leader of his own groups. He has performed at various national & international jazz festivals in France, Portugal, Italy & Spain, and also been on tour of different theatres in Finland with the singer Patrica Kraus, Alfredo Kraus daughter.

He has participated in more than 200 recordings as well as going on tour and performimg at concerts with Antonio Vega, Miguel Ríos Big Band, Orquesta Mondragón, Antonio Carmona, Azúcar Moreno, Tontxu, Tennesse & Raphael, apart from collaborating with Miguel Bosé, Ana Torroja, Enrique Bumbury, David Bisbal, Victor and Ana Belén; and featured in the recording of a DVD at a live concert with RAPHAEL in the square – Plaza de Toros LAS VENTAS de Madrid. He has been on tour with RAPHAEL (50 Años Después, 2009‐2010), performing in many countries, such as the USA, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile (Viña del Mar 2010), Puerto Rico & Russia, among others. He is a regular collaborator as saxophonist in various Television programmes and has also played live with a number of different groups.

Iñaki Arakistain one of the most versatile and important saxophonists in Spain presents his latest Studio ALBUM, “Another Road” 2018 (preceded by: “Tiempos de búsqueda” 2008, “Plan B” 2010 & “Saxual “2014). A new musical approach always accompanied by excellent musicians from the national and international scene, full of good Groove, Jazz and Latin Fusion that mixes exotic and deeply rooted sounds such as Flamenco, Brazilian music, Afro-Jazz and Jazz Funk. Elegant harmonizations and new sounds that travel in a new musical direction from the most actively curious heart of this experienced and experimental saxophonist.

The album SAXUAL comprises six Arakistain originals and four instrumental covers. The journey begins with the dynamic Red Star and the in top form occurring main actor. The good flow is due to the great sax performance always ready to rise to peak exertion at the blink of an eye. The other musicians contribute to this through their perfect engagement. Iñaki approaches Bobby Hebb’s “Sunny” with a jazzy attitude and a great range of improvisation. Michael Jackson’s Blame It On The Boogie grows seamlessly on the listener. Next from Michael’s repertoire is Rock With You. Amazing the flute intro and the sensitive sax interpretation which reveals a great respect for the melody. Certainly one of the best renditions of this popular song. Chemical offers an outstanding horn arrangement, which can concur with those of Tower of Power or East Bay Soul. Jewish Incognita gives room for contemporary jazz and live recording. Nocturnal Beings presents smooth transitions in a flowing shape blending elements of contemporary and smooth jazz to an irresistible sound design.
John Coltrane’s Countdown (Funky Version) is obviously a proof of integrity and completeness for jazz in its original art form with complex harmonic progression and substitute chords. After this challenge to the listener it comes finally in the wake of Latin Jazz with Black Samba. Thrilling rhythm and professional music at the highest level. Saxual is an album that you should listen to in one go. It grabs you and takes you until the last note.
