James Clem

James Clem has been a musician for over thirty years and started to play guitar after hearing Dick Dale play at a car show in Los Angeles where he grew up. He became interested in blues a short while later and got to hear and meet many of the original blues greats such as Bukka White, Muddy Waters and Johnny Shines. He then started a local blues band playing Elmore James style slide and standard style guitar as well. Since that time James has played in many combo playing music from soul to rockabilly.
In the 1990's he started playing more acoustic music and formed the popular trio Tobacco Road that played a mix of Delta and Chicago blues. Solo acoustic gigs also became more frequent as he switched to finger picking country blues. After buying a ukulele at the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena, CA James woodshedded on that and got into vintage swing. The uke became part of his act and his ukulele videos became very popular on You Tube. His Swing , Blues uke CD "Sugar Moon" was runner up for Best Ukulele CD for 2015 by UK's Ukulele Hunt website. That same year his "Road's Gettin' Muddy" blues guitar CD was released. In June, 2019 James is releasing another blues guitar 18 song CD "Stuff You Gotta Watch". All his CD's feature world class musicians such as Mary Flower, upright bassman Craig Snazelle and others. All his recording are all done on analog tape. He tours Europe every fall and has a small but loyal following there.
James lives in Portland, Oregon where he performs and teaches guitar and ukulele when not touring.
