IAA SPOTLIGHT: What city and state are you from?

JAY HARMONY: I live in a small town called Pickering. It’s a part of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), in Ontario, Canada. It’s a pretty quiet place neighboring the town of Ajax, which is the original home of the popular band “Sum 41.

IAA SPOTLIGHT: What is your music background?

JAY HARMONY: In one word I would say, “church”. That is where I honed my singing skills. From there I got invitations to sing at various events including galas, stage shows, Board of Trades meetings for members of parliament. I like all genres of music though. One of my all time favorite artists is Whitney Houston. Although my interest in singing began with singing gospel in church; my musical taste is quite eclectic ranging from R&B to rock.
During the earlier years of my singing career I was concentrated on making it in the industry as an R&B singer, however I had limited access to beats that could complement and infuse the passion that I want my music to express. Two years ago I struck on something that slightly changed my direction. I discovered a great way to have my originals produced and distributed more effectively. This new approach involved re-recording some my R&B songs to reggae beats. My first single hit airwaves and the feedback confirmed that the choice to reinvent my music was a catalyst, setting me in the right direction. Many fans expressed their appreciation of the way I smoothly transposed my R&B tone and style to reggae in an intriguing and stimulating way.

IAA SPOTLIGHT: Why do you want to record and release your own music?

JAY HARMONY: My voice and my songwriting abilities are a gift from God, the universe, and I want to share that with the world. It is my calling, my passion, and my joy. I want to give love, strength, and therapy through my music to those who can relate to situations I write and sing about. I can`t really remember a time when I didn`t write. I started jotting down thoughts in the form of poetry and songs at about age 7. I found writing to be one of the most therapeutic and enlightening ways of self-expression – poems, songs. I am amused when I revisit some of my older compositions. I sometimes find very useful lines in many of them. In fact, my current single “All gone” was written over 10 years ago. It didn’t need much revision when I recorded 10 years later. It’s still relevant and I have yet to find someone who does not love it. I love communicating in this “universal language” of music. There’s just nothing that bring nations together like music does.

IAA SPOTLIGHT: What are your songs about?

JAY HARMONY: My songs are mostly about love, life, and relationships. Some are my personal experiences, some are about friends and other people, and others are just simply made up. It’s not uncommon for me to wake up with lines and/or melodies from a dream that inspires a new song. They may very well be subconscious thoughts, but I like to think of them as a blessing of inspired thoughts. Anyway, generally speaking, most of my songs tell stories of situations that evoke some form of deep emotions.

IAA SPOTLIGHT: Who is your fan base directed towards?

JAY HARMONY: My music speaks to a wide demography. I am sometimes surprised at the diversity of my supporters. Many teenagers appreciate my music as do seniors, but if I have to be more specific I’d say between 20 and 50.

IAA SPOTLIGHT: Who are your musical influences?

JAY HARMONY: I love various genres of music; R&B, soul, jazz, reggae, and house. Artists like Whitney Houston, Jennifer Hudson, Rihanna, Beyonce, Bob Marley, Beres Hammond, John Legend, Etta James, and many more, have all had an impact on the music I write and perform. Some influence me do to their ability to write hit songs, others for their performance styles, and all for their captivating vocal abilities. My R&B flavor is influenced by singers like Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Whitney Houston. My reggae flavor is inspired by singers like Bob Marley, Beres Hammond, and Dennis Brown. So many artists have been influential in my musical development. Just listening to the variety of sounds and styles they offer has had a huge impact on my music.
IAA SPOTLIGHT: How would you describe your music to people?

JAY HARMONY: I would describe my music as relatable, passionate, inspiring, original, captivating, and yet there is something in it that’s different from the norm. My album will have a mix of R&B, soul, reggae & house/dance music. I know some people may immediately think, ‘hmmm in the music business you need to create a niche and a genre that identifies you’, but I disagree. I never put my creativity in a box. When I listen to music it’s simply because it is music that I like, that I enjoy listening to, regardless of the genre. I don’t restrict my craft; I allow it to express itself freely. When I am in my creative zone, whatever feel or style the music comes in, I go with it. Sometimes it’s new house, sometimes its old house, pop, R&B – I don’t really care. I give the universe thanks for the inspiration and I rock on.
IAA SPOTLIGHT: What makes you stand out from other artists?

JAY HARMONY: I have to say the uniqueness of my voice, my vocal range, my vocal quality, and my magnetic personality are what set me apart from other artists. My voice is really versatile. I can sing rock, pop, reggae, R&B almost any musical styles. I’m still working on my rap though. I am also told that I communicate to my audience a deep connection to the songs during my performances. It’s true, I sometimes lose myself into the music. It becomes something of a spiritual journey for me at times. “The voice of an angel” is becoming a common expression from fans; but I’m no angel. Lol

IAA SPOTLIGHT: What are some upcoming projects you are currently working on?

JAY HARMONY: I’m working on a number of singles for my upcoming album. The album will be released this summer. Additionally, I am working on a video for one of my singles.
An international tour is definitely a future prospect. I spend hours each day on the piano improving my skills in order to achieve my goal to one day compose, produce and accompany my songs.

IAA SPOTLIGHT: What are your career goals? Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

JAY HARMONY: My ultimate goal is to be a multi-platinum recording artist and songwriter. I want to collaborate with industry artists and producers like T.I., Timberland, Alicia Keys, Drake and Rihanna.
Somewhere in the next 10 years I see a Grammy. I am a hardworking musician who has fun with my craft. I write almost everyday that’s the kind of determination I have to make it in the music business. I won’t give up on it and I hope that when I get there I will be an inspiration to others, to be relentless in their pursuit to achieve their goals and dreams. I firmly believe in thinking big because that is the first stage of getting what you truly want.
