Jean Caffeine

Jean's life adventures vaulted her from a young SF punk drummer who frequented the Mabuhay Gardens in San Francisco to a songwriter/band front person in Austin and elsewhere. Jean’s journey from as a teen punkette is chronicled a one-woman-one guitar player show, “Sadie Saturday Nite” which she performed in Austin, NYC, San Francisco, Denver, Buffalo and beyond . The “Sadie…” show morphed into the "Sadie Saturday Nite" album released in September on Joe Records, Jean’s first release in six years -and her first vinyl release, ever! The album features Josh Robins (Invincible Czars) John Kovach (Eggmen) and Thor (Swans, Shearwater, Thor and Friends) and Mike Trebilcock (Killjoys, Simply Saucer) Her current video for “Winter of Hate” was directed by Paul Beck, painter, animator and art director of “Scanner Darkly” and “Frijolero” by Molotov.

In the early 8o’s, Jean migrated to New York in the 80’s and was recruited by founder Ann Magnuson to drum for Pulsallama, a theatrical buzz band who opened shows for the Clash, and were featured in Interview Magazine. Pulsallama was sampled this year by edgy artist Danny Brown’s on “Atrocity Exhibition”. Jean’s downtown tenure is further evidenced at the MOMA Club 57 show where she has a low-fi poster she created on display and the flyers has been featured in Architectural Digest online.

When Pulsallama disbanded, Jean formed Clambake with Holly George Warren (author of “A Man Called Destruction”) and two former Austinites, Liz Gall and Cathy Crane. Clambake’s unreleased EP was more-than-mixed by Alex Chilton. Indirectly that helped lead Jean to Austin, where she moved out from behind the drum set to front Jean Caffeine’s All Nite Truckstop, releasing a variety of cool records including, “Jean Caffeine’s All night Truckstop” “Knocked Down 7 Times, Got up 8 , “Idee Fixe” and “Geckos in the Elevator”. Jean is also a visual artist and has exhibited in North America. She was an animator for Linklater’s ‘Waking Life. and if you look carefully you can has a cameo in the movie ‘Slacker’.
