Jim Danby

Singer-songwriter and painter based just outside Hull in the mighty county of Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Music and lyrics run in the family. One of my grandfathers was a musician who played the Euphonium in marching bands, the other was a poet who wrote verses in his native East Yorkshire dialect and could hammer out some decent tunes on the harmonica. My father played the organ and mother could play the piano until other things got in the way of her lessons.

I became interested in the guitar, song-writing and recording back in my teens, when dad would occasionally arrive home with a second-hand acoustic that someone thought we might fancy. Luckily, I did. With some expert tuition from my uncle, Andrew Danby, and a desire to play 'Romeo & Juliet' better than Mark Knopfler himself, I set out on a musical journey that has led me to where I am today.

Personally, I crave songs that have a hook, or at least a section that grabs me and makes me want to listen again. Early influences were Johnny Cash, The Kingston Trio, Boney M and The Baron Knights, leading into The Stranglers, U2, Dire Straits, Siouxsie & The Banshees. More recently, The Levellers, Oasis, Blur, Stereophonics and Kid Wave get my attention, but top of the pile for me is a band from Staines in Surrey, named Hard-Fi. I'd give my Fender acoustic to see them play live.
