Jim Murphy

Jim’s music career began in the second grade when his mother made him go to piano lessons. He later switched to trumpet and French Horn, which he continued to play through college. He became interested in the native American flute through his involvement with the Boy Scouts of America and the Order of the Arrow. In the late ‘90’s he developed a Webelos Crossover Ceremony using drum and flute music in the background. He and his wife, Donna, still provide music for 12-15 ceremonies every year.
Eventually his interest widened to include indigenous flutes from other parts of the world. Along the way he saw how the sultry tones of the wood flute affected one’s mood; it possesses the power to relax. Some say these tones have healing powers, while others believe they allow the soul to go where the body can heal. Jim talked with other artists, those who play for patients recovering from major surgery or enduring terminal illness, about their methods and experiences.
He and Donna took their music to various venues from bars to senior centers and developed repertoires best suiting the audience. Eventually he was asked to play for a hospice facility, Brian’s House in Bay City, Michigan. His association with the staff, patients, and families led to the development of this album. Proceeds of the sales go to support Brian’s House.
