John Finbury

John is a pianist and composer from Andover, Massachusetts. His most recent album "Sorte! featuring Thalma de Freitas was nominated for a 2020 Grammy for Best Latin Jazz Album. In 2016 his song "A Chama Verde" was nominated for a Latin Grammy for
Song Of The Year."

He started on drums in high school rock bands and studied piano and composition at Longy School of Music in Cambridge and Boston University. His musical idols include Bill Evans, Monk, and Jobim. He plays piano in the jazz sextet with his wife, singer Patty Brayden, who co-wrote the lyrics with Ned Claflin on many of the songs on his album "Pitanga" as well as his MPB album from 2015 "Imaginário."

In 2018, he began a collaboration with Brazilian lyricist, singer and actress Thalma de Freitas, whose early co-writing credits include João Donato and Céu. Recorded at the legendary Powerstation at Berklee in New York City, "Sorte!"project was co-produced by Latin Grammy winner Emilio D. Miler, who assembled an all-star band for this recording, featuring:
