John Yao

Since arriving from his native Chicago over 10 years ago, Yao’s adept skill as a trombonist, composer, arranger and bandleader have helped cement his place on the New York City jazz scene. He has performed with Grammy-award winning ensembles such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, as well as Paquito D’Rivera, Eddie Palmieri, Danilo Perez, Kurt Elling, Chino Nunez and has recorded with the Jeff Fairbanks Jazz Orchestra, Mulberry Street 2010 (BJU Records) and The Joshua Shneider Love Speaks Orchestra, The Joshua Shneider Love Speaks Orchestra featuring Luci Woodward, 2013 (BJU Records).

Yao also the leader of two working bands, the John Yao Quintet and John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument, both projects feature his adventurous compositions. Jazz Times says the John Yao Quintet “incorporate(s) an insistently swinging Jazz Messengers vibe while also stepping into the free-rider zone at times.” Lucid Culture wrote Yao’s 2012 Innova release, In the Now “blends vivid tunefulness, clever composition and inspired teamwork. It’s accessible, but it’s also cerebral, and there’s considerable wit here.” John’s big band project, John Yao & His 17-piece Instrument, recently recorded and is set to release Flip-Flop in the Summer of 2015.

As a composer, he has been commissioned by professional ensembles such as the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra and Band of Bones, in addition he has written numerous commissions for educational ensembles around the world and was a member of the BMI Jazz Composers Workshop from 2012-14. He currently lives in Jackson Heights, NY and everyday sets out to challenge himself daily as composer and a performer.
