Karen Hellyer

Karen is a singer-songwriter, digital multimedia artist, an FCC-licensed radio producer and high school photo/video teacher currently residing in the Bay Area. Originally from Illinois, she left downstate Champaign / Urbana and moved to the California in 1997. In 1993 she released her first full-length album titled Peon Queen and toured the East Coast. Over the years she’s opened for artists such as Vic Chesnutt, Ani Difranco, The Vulgar Boatmen and The Pansy Division, as well as headlined in numerous Midwest locals. Morst recently, she’s been working on her claw-hammer banjo skills, and recording with former "Swamp Girl" Kyla Wilson (on guitar and vox) and pal Valerie Garrison (on upright bass) both in Portland OR, under the band name “Alive & Chicken.”
