Ken McBride

Born in 1953, Ken has been a musician since age 12. That's when he got his first guitar (“unfortunately smashed to smithereens when I left it in our tree fort overnight”). Guitar number two was electric and came courtesy of his supportive Dad. Still in his teens, Ken played rock 'n roll and British invasion tunes in several bands in his hometown of Montreal. Expo 67 in Montreal provided a chance to meet some visiting music legends just hitting the big time, including Simon &Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, and The Grateful Dead.

But California was the place to be, and Ken moved to Hollywood at 17. A year later, he was back in Canada, settling in Vancouver. While playing guitar in several Vancouver bands, Ken also started repairing and building guitars. As the Guitar Doctor since 1985, Ken has fixed the guitars of several well-known musicians and built some unusual guitars.

He and his family now live on the Sunshine Coast, just north of Vancouver. In addition to playing classic rock with his former bands, Altamira and Altered, Ken loves playing experimental music with friends. He keeps busy locally as a sound technician and has led music activities with school children and developmentally challenged adults. Recently, Ken began writing songs again, and wrote 50 in 2013. Many of them appear on his new CD, on which he’s going solo. And of course, he is still the Guitar Doctor!
