Kenneth Newby

Kenneth Newby is the creator of compositions of media performance, electro-acoustic and acoustic music; interactive computer systems for live performance and installation; software tools for composition of music and animation, new composition for Javanese and Balinese gamelan ensembles; interdisciplinary collaborations with composers and artists in various disciplines (film, video, dance, theatre, poetry, shadow play) and participation in improvisational ensembles.

His Ecology of Souls album was considered a landmark in the electroacoustic-ambient genre. His work in this area reached a conclusion in his collaboration with Steve Roach and Stephen Kent on the Halcyon Days album.

His recent compositional work has brought him back to his classical roots and the creation of a personal theory of music encoded in his Flicker Computer Assisted Composition system. The music—at once subtle, nuanced, exciting and beautiful—can be heard on the three volumes of his Emergence Trilogy: Chambers; Elegeia; and spectral (golden) lyric.
