Maia Banks

Maia Banks has been writing songs and making sounds from any instrument she can find for as long as she can remember. She has cut two albums of her own work, with the help of some world class artists (Al Weatherhead of Sparklehorse and Cracker and guitarist Bryan Hoffa of The Broken Hips) and the third is currently in the works. She has worked with and for numerous musicians (Kokayi, Sharkey, C-Rayz Walz, Macy Gray to name a few) as a writer and singer. she has licensed her music out to film, theater and television: Bomb it (the movie), The Moor, based on the Pushcart winning short story by Russell Banks, directed by Caerthan Banks, and the theater productions of Minor Demons and Crack Walker, based out of The Company of Angels Theater in LA, and the television show South of Nowhere. She has done vocal work for advertising both locally, nationally and internationally. She is currently working on music to accompany an animated interpretation of SUM by David Eagleman. Her live shows are described as ‘intimate, as though she were whispering her songs in your ear’. She has been compared to everyone from Tom Waits to Tracey Chapman to Lou Reed and Fiona Apple, all compliments to Maia. Her brand of stripped down neo-noir punk urban folk has been described as being ‘smokey soundscapes using minimal textures and rich layers in well crafted songs using burnished and distinctively feminine, sultry, raw, soulful and hynpnotic.’ She currently is based in New York, traveling from the country to write to the city to record, with her trusty companion, Blackie the dog.
