Mala Waldron

Pianist, vocalist, composer, Mala Waldron is the daughter of two jazz pianists (most notably her father, jazz pianist/composer Mal Waldron.) She first began taking piano lessons at age 7. Later at age 15, she joined a local R&B band, Liquid Pleasure, that was quickly signed by Midland Int'l Records/RCA. Later, she enrolled at SUNY - Old Westbury to study jazz piano, voice & composition with Makanda Ken McIntyre, Richard Harper, Warren Smith and Amina Claudine Myers, earning a B.A. Degree. Currently she balances local performances with regular tours in Europe and Asia. Career highlights include opening at the Diet Coke Women in Jazz Festival (JALC) for Patrice Rushen, being guest arranger/vocalist with James “Jabbo” Ware's “Me, We & Them Orchestra,” and appearing in the documentary, “The Girls in the Band.” Recordings as a featured artist include, “Lullabye,” (Tokuma Communications) a solo debut and tribute to godmother, Billie Holiday, “He's My Father,” (also on Tokuma) a duo project with father, pianist/composer, Mal Waldron and “Always There,” named one of the Top 10 CDs of 2006 by JAZZUSA.
