Marilyn Miller

I was born at a time of great change in the world that was both wonderful and tragic. I saw it every night on TV. And, as my father yelled at the news every night, I dreamed of joining the hippies, traveling the country and believing in peace. I didn't really 'get' it... I was too young to understand how drugs were decimating the ranks of the free spirits. However, the search for peace for the world, the love for other humans, the yearning to travel and MUSIC, has truly been the emphasis of my adult life. As an adult, I continue to work for peace in the world, as well as develop a love for humankind in my own heart, while searching out musical experience.

In my 40's, it became possible to travel with an international group of Neil Young fans, and I have seen places I would never have ventured to go to on my own. Somewhere along the line, I picked up an old friend from high school, my guitar, and started to be serious about learning how to play. I wanted to fit in with my friends when they would sit around the campfire at the end of an evening and play Neil Young songs until late at night.....

It wasn't terribly long until I met a good friend, David Hodge, who became my biggest mentor. He introduced me to playing with others, in key and in time. He pushed me to start performing on stage --long before I was actually ready, but he knew what he was about, and learning the guitar at the same time as learning how to sing and how to perform, made it all one piece for me to enjoy-- and the bug bit me hard.

Encouraged by my successes and experiencing first hand that I don't die if I totally bomb on stage, I kept going. I met a lot of people who encouraged me. I took over an open mic because I hated to see it die and it became the biggest vehicle for meeting musicians to play with.... and it grew until circumstances shut it down. Around that time, I met Rick Warren, who one day said to me, 'If you ever want a lead guitar player with you, I would be interested'.

Lead guitar? From YOU?? Are you KIDDING???

And we tried it. Both of us likely it. And it grew into Rick and Marilyn, with our own ‘style’ of music we call Electro-acoustic. Or Acousto-electric. We haven’t formally decided…. But we do like it. And we are working to get heard.

We are both born in the late 50s, grew up in the 60s and came of age in the 70s. We play music from that time period, we identify with that time period, and I think very much my original music is informed by that time period. I think our biggest fans are those who are similar in age, folk/rock people who really like strong singing and intricate guitar work. The sort of folk who still enjoy a good song played and sung well while eating a meal and/or having a drink. The sort of folk who are happy to come out in the afternoon and evening, but want to home by 10 pm and are willing to spend some money while listening to music they enjoy. If you are that sort, please come and give us a listen!
