Mark Mitchell

Mark Mitchell, originally from North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, moved with his family to Philadelphia, PA during the mid-60s.
Mark started playing the violin at the age of seven. He later picked up the trumpet but gravitated toward the saxophone at the age of twelve. Mark studied at Settlement Music School for a number of years, but he was introduced to the Jazz genre by Philadelphia Jazz saxophonist, Tony Williams. Tony was an administrator at Lewis Middle School, where Mark was attending. Under Tony's tutelage, Mark and fellow peers James Lloyd, Curtis Harmon, Cedric Napoleon (Pieces of a Dream) and Pamela Williams, and others were exposed to numerous Philadelphia region Jazz musicians. These artists included the likes of; Tommy Grice, Odean Pope, Bootsy Barnes, Gerald Price, Eddie Green, Sonny Hoxter, Al Jackson, to name a few. Some of these musicians then and still donate their time, talent, and services to educate young people about Jazz. The program became known as the Mount Airy Culture Center (MACC) and Mark is currently an instructor.
Though Mark attributes his foundation, as well as his love of music to the Jazz idiom, he has a love for Gospel/Inspirational music. He has performed at venues throughout the Philadelphia region including World Café, Warmdaddy's, Zanzibar Blue, Delaware Art Museum, Delaware Theater, Delaware State Hospital, Delaware State Prisons, various churches, and social events. Additionally, he has had the opportunity to open for, or share the stage with gospel and jazz artists alike, such as; Rance Allen, LaShun Pace, Kim Burrell, The Pace Sisters, Twinkie Clark, James Moore, Bubby Fann, Timothy Wright, and Richard Smallwood, Dizzy Gillespie, Grover Washington Jr, Brian Culbertson, and Al 'The Bass Burner' Turner.
In addition to performing, he continues to develop his talents in the areas of composing, arranging, recording, and producing. And this year he furthered his entrepreneurial aspirations by becoming a business owner and creating Mark Mitchell Music, Inc. His company allows him to share his gifts through a variety of services that are entertaining, educational, and inspirational.
