Mary Armitage

Mary Armitage lives in the new city of Surrey, just thirty minutes south of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. During the late sixties and early seventies, she performed as both a traditional folk singer and original singer/songwriter in various clubs and festivals in England, and also featured on a series of Night Ride BBC radio shows, hosted by the late Jon Curle. Mary's career was interrupted when she came to Canada and, upon returning to the music scene, played for nine years in a Caribbean steel band in the lower mainland. In 2007, when she returned to folk music, she was able to adapt her band instrument to selected traditional pieces, such as, "Barbara Allen", and, "Willie O'Winsbury", both of which can be heard on her CD. Mary is an active member of the Vancouver Folk Song Society and performs regularly in various clubs in, and around, Vancouver. She has also performed at Seattle Folk Life, and the Princeton Traditional Music Festival. While her roots are in traditional folk music, Mary enjoys performing her own material, which ranges from gentle ballads to light hearted ditties, and her CD reflects a wide variety of moods and styles. It is truly eclectic!
