Matthew Schickele

Comfortable across genres, Matthew Schickele has written songs, electronic music, and chamber music for the stage, ensembles, bands and recordings for over two decades. His most recent work has been in audio-portraiture, where field recordings are collaged to create music specific to a place. His chamber opera, Marymere, has had four concert productions, and his settings of science texts have been performed in both concert venues and science conferences.

As a songwriter, Schickele’s numerous releases include The Badger Game, April/November, and Cities Filled With Lights. He is a cofounder of the acoustic band M Shanghai, and in the 90s he was 1/3 of the indie-rock group Beekeeper.

Schickele’s chamber music has been featured by the 5ive Boroughs Music Festival, The Morgan Library, and MASSMoCA, among others. Commissions have included the Da Capo Chamber Players and the St. Luke’s Chamber Ensemble. He is a graduate of Bard College, where he studied composition with Joan Tower.
