Michael Fitzpatrick

Michael is a champion dancer and musician, as well as an accomplished writer, composer and entertainer who began his career in Irish music and dancing at the age of 5. Musically, his first instrument was the button accordion, learned under the guidance of the late great Roscommon accordionist John Glynn. In his teenage years, Michael’s instrument playlist expanded to include the violin, tin whistle, piano, drums, percussion, mandolin, harmonica, foot-base, and guitar amongst others. A 1976 Fleadh Cheol All-Ireland Lilting Champion, he was also a multi-year US Fleadh Cheol reigning button accordion champion during the 1970’s as well as a violinist/drummer in The All-Ireland medaling Galtymore Ceili Band under the direction of Limerick fiddle great Martin Mulvihill
Michael’s competitive dancing career spanned 15 years, solely under the direction of the late dance master, Cyril McNiff (TCRG/ADCRG). During that time he won many local and state championships, including The North American Dancing Championships in 1971 and 1975, as well as the Eastern Regional Championships in 1976. He also represented North America at numerous All-World Dancing Championships in Dublin, Ireland during the 1970’s.
Michael began playing feiseanna regularly on the championship level in 1975 and after 1987, he took a ten year hiatus from organized dancing to pursue cabaret and Showband musical career interests. He returned to the feis circuit in 1997 and once again he is featured as a championship level musician. His recent musical performing credits include The New England Regional Oireachtas 2003-2008, The Southern Regional Oireachtas 2004-2009, as well as The North American Championships 2008 and The All-World Irish Dancing Championships 2009. In February 2008, he performed as a featured dancer/singer/musician on Holland America’s Irish All-Star Cruise where he debuted an original musical score, as well as dance routines that he created, choreographed, and danced as a soloist
Michael earned his TCRG in 1984, and at that time he was a musical assistant and choreographer to various dancing schools regarding their Dance Drama and show teams. In 2006, he re-affirmed his commitment to organized Irish Dancing when he passed his ADCRG Exam to become an adjudicator. Since then, he has been active throughout the United States serving in both capacities as an adjudicator as well as a musician at North American Feis Commission sanctioned events. In December 2008, Michael adjudicated his first All-World qualifying event, namely, The US Southern Regional Oireachtas, and later, was deeply honored to have been selected to adjudicate the 2009 North American Championships, held in Nashville, Tennessee. Residing in the Boston area of Massachusetts, he presently serves on the Executive Board of The Irish Dancing Teacher’s Association of New England in the capacity of Recording/Corresponding Secretary.
His CD credits to date are “The Official List”, released in 2001, and “The Official List II” released in 2002. His latest release, “The Whispering Door” (2009) has earned critical acclaim throughout the Irish Dancing World and features Irish Dance music ideally suited for step dancers of all grade levels. This CD also showcases many of his original compositions as well as a few musical surprises with arrangements that are as equally pleasant to listen to as they are to dance to!
