Michael-Louis Smith

MLS and Brooklyn Circle

Description:
Michael-Louis Smith and Brooklyn Circle perform an ever evolving, high-energy mix of original shred jazz, world, rock and groove jams.
This band of brothers has delivered the goods to audiences in NYC, the Northeast and nationwide for close to two decades with an electric and sometimes telepathic group sound. This sound is characterized by a diverse repertoire of intelligent and booty shaking original material with a touch of magic and is driven by thoughtfully blistering saxophone solos (Stacy Dillard), fiery funkified guitar work (MLS), rootsy percolating bass grooves (Diallo House), and scientifically imaginative drumming (Ismail Lawal).

Biography:
Guitarist and composer Michael-Louis Smith and Brooklyn Circle members Diallo House (bass) Stacy Dillard (saxophone)and Ismail Lawal (drums) have been making music together since late 2001/early 2002. The genesis of this collaboration happened in the winter of 2001 when longtime friends and bandmates Smith, and House crossed paths with Dillard while at a rehearsal space outside of New York City. Dillard would later describe the introduction as “ from the moment we met it was just like the Wizard of Oz, you know how they all met and now they’re skipping down the road trusting each other with their lives and everything. The same way, no screening process just friends, friends!” Very soon after that on a jam session at the Blue Note in New York City they connected with drummer Ismail Lawal. Smith recalls House saying “ I like the way he plays!”, and within a week the four of them were performing together on the road. Now, in 2018, 17 years, hundreds of shows, multiple albums and many tours later the music is stronger than ever, and just keeps on getting better.

Vermont connection:
To stay that this group has a strong connection to Vermont would be an understatement. The love for their brothers and sisters and all of the beauty the Green Mountain State has to offer runs deep. Since their formation, the group has not missed an opportunity to perform in Vermont where they recorded their first to LPs “Hot House Quartet” (2003) and “Live Bait” (2004) and has performed at countless venues across the state including 15 consecutive years at Burlington is Discover Jazz Festival.
