OKAN is women-led contemporary Afro-Cuban roots and jazz

Taking its name from the word for soul or heart in the Afro Cuban religion Santeria, OKAN brings powerful vocals, incredible musicianship and potent lyrical content to a fusion of Afro-Cuban tradition, jazz and other global rhythms.

Embracing Cuban genres and musical roles that have historically been dominated by men, OKAN co-leaders, composers and multi-instrumentalists Elizabeth Rodriguez and Magdelys Savigne are JUNO winners and Grammy-nominees for their contributions to Jane Bunnett & Maqueque’s recording projects as well as JUNO-nominees for their recent work with Battle of Santiago.

Living and collaborating in the intensely multicultural city of Toronto has enriched OKAN’s composition with influences from Brazil, Spain and New Orleans.

Produced by Latin Grammy-winning bassist Roberto Riveron OKAN's debut EP Laberinto features special guests fellow Cuban Canadian artist Pablosky Rosales, Alexis Baro, Dana Olano and Reimundo Sosa as well as guest pianists Jeremy Ledbetter and Bill King,
