Rick Robinson

CutTime Simfonica is the string sextet (now with drums) resetting classical music with fresh new music blending popular grooves with neo-classical like Dvorak. Detroit Symphony (DSO) bassist Rick Robinson launched the ensemble in 2010 with principal DSO string players by writing oboe and English horn solos for surprising and personal classical adventures. Besides concert stages they play often in clubs, restaurants, churches, festivals and schools. Robinson enjoys kickin' it ole school because tonality and counterpoint are so sexy and fun. Robinson started in Highland Park, MI in a fourth-generation musical family. After attending Interlochen Arts Academy for high school, he went to top music schools in Cleveland and Boston, won principal bass in several regional orchestras including the Boston Pops with John Williams, before joining the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) in 1989. A few years later he began arranging symphonic hits for an eight-piece ensemble called CutTime Players. A few years from then, Robinson heard a new composition in a DREAM and finished it in the wake of a divorce.

DSO read the work in 2003 and premiered it formally in 2006 whereupon Robinson decided to compose intentionally, and specifically to launch CutTime Simfonica as a complementary mini-orchestra to Players. With more than a dozen monumental compositions, including the Mighty Love (2007), Robinson orchestrated four for premieres with River Oaks Chamber Orchestra and Michigan Philharmonic. In 2012 he conducted the DSO in these works. He won a Kresge Artist Fellowship in 2010 and a Knight Arts Challenge grant in 2013 to grow the Classical Revolution Detroit club classical series.

Now known as Mr. CutTime, Robinson quit the DSO in 2012 to expand CutTime® into a national enterprise with a mission to share classical and esp. symphonic music in ways thought impossible. It's time to cut loose with classical.
