Robbie Greig

Tales of heartbreak, frustration, friendship, joy and new beginnings at Varkala Beach in Kerala, South India. Take a journey with the song man as he tries to unravel the meaning of his experiences in this beautiful corner of the subcontinent. Listen to the story of a freak fire that left families without homes and livelihoods, and the relief effort that followed. Hear about the corruption of local government officials who sought to profit from the misfortunes of their constituents. Celebrate with the song man the flowering of new friendships, and join him as he struggles to come to terms with the mysteries, tragedies and healings that characterise his encounters with Indian life.

Presented in collaboration with some of Melbourne’s finest jazz/world music exponents – Howard Cairns (double bass), Dene Ford (electric guitar), Michael Jordan (drums), Sandro Donati (trumpet), Rodney Waterman (recorder), Kavisha Mazzella (vocals) and Raju Sharma (tabla) – and interlaced with audio bites recorded on site, Songman in India takes you to the shores of the Arabian Sea, sits you down on the warm sand and spins you tales of the enigma that is India.

Robbie Greig holds a unique place in the musical soundscape of Melbourne with his ability to combine the storytelling style of the troubadour with infectious roots-based grooves. He has received awards from the Australia Council, the Australian Songwriters Association, Eltham Arts Council/Leader Newspapers and 3RRR. His song Al Saunders’ Garage has been an ABC Radio staple, and his Wurundjeri Sorry Song played frequently on 3CR and Koori stations around Victoria. He has collaborated with Steven Cummings, Kavisha Mazzella, Kutcha Edwards, Melanie Shanahan, Andy Baylor, Hugh McDonald and the Bauls of Bengal, and has had his compositions used in films and theatre. His material incorporates elements of folk, rock, reggae, blues and jazz. Songman in India is Robbie’s ninth studio release.
