Russell Veirs

Concert saxophonist Dr. Russell Veirs began private saxophone instruction at the University of California, Davis under Dr. Keith Bohm, where he performed in the school’s Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Symphony Orchestra, and Saxophone Quartet. Veirs continued his studies with Dr. Bohm at California State University, Sacramento, where he completed his Master of Music degree, and served as saxophonist for the CSUS Symphony Orchestra, principle saxophonist of the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and a member of the CSUS Saxophone Quartet and CSUS Saxophone Orchestra. In 2007, he was runner-up in the CSUS Festival of New American Music Performers Competition, and gave his concerto debut with the CSUS Symphonic Wind Ensemble that same year.

Veirs earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in saxophone performance at UCLA, studying with Dr. Douglas Masek. At UCLA, he performed in numerous woodwind chamber ensembles, the Camarades string chamber ensemble, and UCLA’s contemporary music ensemble, Contempo Flux. A winner of UCLA's "All-Star Concerto Competition", he appeared as a soloist with the UCLA Philharmonia in 2012. Additionally, he assisted in teaching the woodwind methods course for music education majors and has assisted in coaching the UCLA woodwind chamber ensembles.

Outside of his formal education, Dr. Veirs has appeared as a guest artist, clinician, and chamber musician throughout California. In 2006, he recorded for the soundtrack to the documentary Out of the Past. He was selected as a winner of the 2014 Beverly Hills Audition, which led to solo performances on the Torrance Interludes and Music by the Sea concert series in Southern California. The Barefoot Trio (a saxophone/violin/piano trio in which Veirs is a founding member) served as an ensemble-in-residence in the music department at UCLA during the 2015-2016 academic year. He has had the privilege of premiering numerous works, most recently Optimist Quintet (2016) by Bevan Manson and Reminiscence (2016) by Glenn Llorente. In 2017, as part of a celebration of Adolphe Sax’s birthday, he appeared as a soloist on the Sundays Live! radio broadcast from LACMA’s Bing Theater. Dr. Veirs has appeared as soloist with the Woodland Community Band, Roseville Community Band, and most recently with the Dana Point Symphony. Additionally, he has given music clinics and masterclasses at numerous schools and colleges in California.
