Sam Newton

Sam Newton brings to the Australian singer-songwriter scene a sound that sits amongst a blend of folk, acoustic blues and foot stomping alternative-country.

Born and raised in Sydney whilst maintaining a blood link to the Riverina area of Regional New South Wales, Sam’s lush arrangements dance on the crossroads of songwriting and composing; where music and lyrics combine to create a raw, honest and unified sound, forcing one to reverie in distant times and memories.

It is this narrative song-craft, his classically trained skill set and a wild predisposition for soaring instrumental lines that provides Sam Newton with a signature sound influenced by an array of artists such as Iron & Wine, Neil Young, Glen Hansard and Johnny Cash. Described as “vividly illustrated story telling” (SMH 10/12/11), Sam’s lyricism and musical delivery is both individual and inviting with a sound that appeals to a broad spectrum of tastes.

Following Sam Newton’s self-titled EP in 2011, his first full length album ‘Set in Stone’ is a crowd funded project two years in the making and is due for release on October 18, 2014.

The album began with the title track in the backyard of an inner-city terrace on a first date as a means of demonstrating his romantic charm. It has since evolved into a mixed-bag of softly spoken narrative dreamscapes, brass-backed electric guitar anthems, harmonic strings and pedal-steel soaked ballads. It features both older songs too sentimental to ignore and those that represent where Newton is as a songwriter and musician today.

The title track duet “Set in Stone” reveals a new, more personal direction of songwriting while others such as “Bill’s Lost Love” demonstrate Newton’s signature multi-layered arrangements and soulful, narrative-driven lyrics.

The latter is a song written at Paradise Beach in Victoria during a soul searching adventure around Australia. Sam explains that he “wants the listener to be immersed into a difference place and time where experiences within the song are real and the emotions of the lyrics are confronted”.

Set in Stone is not just a collection of the best songs mustered up until this point, but also a time capsule, with every track having its own story and mark in the artist’s personal history. Sam Newton’s debut album speaks for itself as a strong release.
