Sandra Layman

Violinist Sandra Layman grew up with a love of classical music and a hankering after music of the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and the Near East.

Shortly after hanging out with Romanian gypsy musicians (including Damian Luca) and local Greek musicians, she started jamming with klezmer pioneers The Klezmorim in the late 1970s. She went on to co-found the Pacific Northwest's first klezmer band in 1980 and later formed a duo with cimbalom player Alexander Eppler to play Romanian and Hungarian music.

In the late 1980s, she spent several years studying music in Romania on Fulbright and IREX fellowships.

Sandra has long been acclaimed for performance of klezmer fiddle, Romanian Gypsy "muzica lautareasca." Greek music, and Near Eastern music, as well as classical music (violin and viola). She has played in various configurations throughout the years.

She has collaborated with some of the greats, including Joel Rubin, Alexander Eppler, Jack "Yankl" Falk, and Hank Bradley.

Sandra Layman currently teaches violin and viola students of all ages in her Seattle studio and is available for performances and workshops.
