Shona Brown

Shona Brown is a musician and solo performer based in Glasgow. She uses looping technology to layer her flutes and vocals with electronic sounds to create atmospheric songs and soundscapes.

Shona grew up in Motherwell and began playing the flute at age 12. At the age of 13 she recorded with Mogwai on their album “Young Team”. This experience taught her that she definitely wanted to become a musician. She went on to study classical flute and won many awards including a Donald Dewar Arts Award, a masters with distinction from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and was a semi-finalist in the BBC Young Musician of the Year.

After her studies she continued to work with many notable artists and groups including the National Theatre of Scotland, Barbara Thompson and Rockstar Entertainment. She set up SoundRoutes, an organisation through which she runs a 150-strong community choir and other workshops and recording projects. In 2012 she created a groundbreaking project called “Changing Key” which enabled prisoners of HMP Addiewell to release a 4 track EP which raised thousands of pounds for Shelter Scotland.

She released her debut EP of folk/world inspired acoustic songs and instrumentals “Gather the Ocean” in 2011. Since then she has had a change of direction. She set out with the goal of engineering her own music and working with a more ambient and electronic sound. She now performs solo with a much more electronic set. She debuted this new sound with five shows at the Edinburgh Fringe 2014 which received favourable reviews.

She is now set to release the result of her work in a new project “10 in 10” which will see the release of 10 records in 10 months (on the 10th of every month). Her first release will be a 3 track EP “The Narrow Road” on the 10th of November, 2014.
