Stephanie Heidemann

BIO: Stephanie Heidemann, Vocalist

Stephanie Heidemann has been performing devotional and folk music from Eastern Europe, Old Spain, Africa, and America since 1994.

With an upbringing in Australia, Venezuela, Germany and the U.S., she is “at home” with singing and blending styles and techniques in an approach of fusion that has become her own. Studying piano for 12 years created her foundation. She currently sings in English, Spanish (old and current), Ladino, Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian, Italian, Latin, Zulu, and writes songs in English & Spanish.

For 7 years, she toured nationally with World Music vocal quartet, "VIDA", managed by NYC's IMG-Artists. “VIDA” arranged & performed traditional & non-traditional World Music in concert halls everywhere from UCLA's Royce Hall, Rockefeller Center in NYC, Lincoln Center's “Great Performers” Series, the Hague Peace Conferences (2000), to World Music Festivals all over the U.S. They shared the stage with notable artists such as Ani DiFranco, Bob Dylan, Howard Levy (Bela Fleck & the Flecktones) and Peter, Paul & Mary. Their music was highlighted in the Fox film, “Wolf Girl”. VIDA released 2 CDs, “VIDA”('95), and “In Bloom”.('96)

VIDA's great appeal stems from its members' spirited voices, unassuming charm and sure sense for repertoire. -Billboard Magazine

With a B.A. in Expressive Arts Therapy from Indiana University, Heidemann richly explored improvisation and authentic creativity through expressive voice-movement settings and brings this influence to her music. In this time, she also studied expressive movement with Cincinnati Certified Movement Analyst/dancer, Fanchon Shur and George Pinney (Stage Movement/Musical Theatre). In 2004, Heidemann met and became a student of the notable NY-Metropolitan Opera Mezzo Diva Brenda Boozer. Boozer has been her mentor ever since.

Heidemann debuted her first solo CD: “The Cantiga Project” in 2004. It is an intimate Portrait of Spanish Devotional music from the 13th Century. In 2006, NPR highlighted it on All Song's Considered. In the Fall 2010, it is to be released on Sounds True's CD Compilation: Songs of Mary.

“The Resonance Project” is a cross-pollination between percussionist/ composer, Julian Douglas and Heidemann. Together, they record and arrange New Music with traditional and non-traditional World Music influences. Their influences come from Early Spanish/Sephardic Music, Classical Indian music, the Afro-Cuban diaspora, East-European folk traditions, North Africa and jazz...creating a sound unique to "The Resonance Project". Their material is predominantly all voice and percussion, but have collaborated with diverse artists from Jazz to R&B. Their most recently released CD-project “Your Voice Through Mine” with singer-songwriter Charles Gibson (R&B), was released in Jan '08.

Stephanie resides in sunny Sarasota, FL, where she teaches private students, and her workshop series: Authentic Voicework. She collaborates with long-time music partner Julian Douglas in their studio & their own group, Ensemble Nada.
